Summer Safety Tips: Life in the Triangle

Life in Chapel Hill and the greater Triangle is full of activity, and that activity doesn’t slow down when the summer temperatures start to rise. Yet, if you aren’t careful, you could end up falling ill due to the high heat and humidity common in our area in late summer. Here are some tips to help keep you safe while enjoying all that the Triangle has to offer.

1. Keep an Eye on the Temperature

First, make sure you know what the temperature is going to be throughout the day, including the heat index. If it’s getting into a dangerous zone, plan your activities accordingly. Focus on indoor activities and stay out of the heat during the mid-day hours when the temperatures are going to get in the 90s and higher.

Make sure you pack plenty of water when you are going out. When temperatures are 90 and above, adults need a minimum of a gallon of liquid per day, and water is best. When the humidity makes the heat index higher, you may need even more. To keep yourself hydrated, avoid caffeine and alcohol whenever possible.

3. Know Your Limits

When you do need to be outdoors in the heat, know your limits. Don’t plan extensive outdoor activities without breaks, and have ample water if you must be outside for extended periods of time. If you have kids, make sure you understand that small children can’t take the heat nearly as long as adults. Similarly, elderly loved ones are at higher risk of heat illness, so make sure you check on those near you.

Summer is a great time to explore the indoor activities in and around the Triangle. Visit a museum, take in a movie or explore a local art gallery to get out of the heat while still enjoying your local community. This is an excellent time of year to head to the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center, the North Carolina Museum of Life and Science or the NC Museum of Art.
